Good App!
The last time this app was updated was 2 YEARS ago. Many complaints about app issues with no response from developers. Subscription is too expensive for this cr@p app.
It stays on for about 10 seconds then shuts down.
I’m a subscriber and I am ready to cancel my subscription because the app does not load. I can read Salon on my desktop but I really miss reading it on my phone. Not sure how much longer I can remain a subscriber. I am not sure Salon cares.
This is consistently one of the worst performing apps on my phone. I canceled my sub because all i can read are author bios and I’m paying 120 bucks a year for this. N
The app opens to a white display and stays that way. Content doesn’t load. iPhone 13 IOS 16.3.
The iPad app is a piece. I have a subscription, but can’t use it on the iPad. There is no issue using it on the iPhone, but iPad…different story. When attempting to login the app consistently says the login is incorrect, which I know to be false. Terrible. Deserves 0 stars on iPad.
When trying to enter site the app goes off. I just got this app!!!
Salon has good articles, but the app and it’s portrait orientation only are so annoying that I stopped using it and deleted the app, besides, what do I need an app for when I can just go to their web site on Safari.
Love the writing - unfortunately the app constantly crashes not matter how up to date my OS is it the app is. Frustrating as heck.
They don’t even try to cover the news. It is very clear where they stand on politics.
Most iPad covers open so the iPad is in the landscape mode. This app either doesn’t sense that or will not rotate to that. Makes reading difficult with a cover that opens like a book cover in portrait mode
Yesterday I Download this App and by far I was really pleased and Learn some new News, Different Things here very impressive App.I couldn’t be pleased with Salon App. I was reading about Trump be re-elected then America could be Fascism, So I gotta go back and finished reading about Fascism. BIG THANKS FOR SALON,
Reliable news, fair opinion articles.
Not in terms of content - good news is often hard to come by these days. But Salon is good journalism. In virtually every article I read, I learn something. Something that doesn’t bubble up on 24/7/365 sound bites on a flickering screen.
Headline font is illegible and super pretentious. Please replace it.
See above
I paid a subscription, but Salon never accepts my signin, and I can only read the first page of any article. Really annoying.
I’ve enjoyed Salon’s coverage for years, and hope to for years to come.
Access to Andrew O’Hehir alone is worth 5 stars.
///Update to original review: cancelling my trial subscription. Really—there is enough design info and know-how out there to create a good user experience./// Please get a visual designer to create more readable titles in the app. White text on light photos make for about 50% readability when scrolling through articles. I probably won’t continue with a subscription. Other magazine apps are much easier to scan and read.
The latest makeover squeezes the list of articles into a small stripe down the center of the screen with about 2/3 of the available “red space” left entirely blank. No subtitle or summary of an article is given until you click on it. Browsing for content does not need to be this hard, guys.
Streamlined layout; very easy to navigate. I’ll be reading Salon on mobile from now on. Love being able to watch Salon Talks conversations and intriguing documentaries in the app, too.
Would be stars but some categories not updating on iPad as they should.
I feel dumb just reading it.
I've read your articles for quite awhile, recently installed the app. The writers put a good left handed swing on things.. keep up the good work.. we need the pot to be stirred=] Only drawback is that news isn't always fresh and some grammatical errors.. may make it seem not as believable at times : /
I understand the election is near, but Salon's team of writers have found nothing interesting enough in the entire world that deserves attention besides Donald Trump. Talented as the staff may be, their utter disregard for all current events that don't surround Donald Trump is very disappointing.
I feel like they recycle a lot of their stories by just republishing them with a new title and image. They don't even bother trying to keep their most read articles up to date. Or maybe their read articles are the most read because that is all they have to read.
Search is a critical function for a news app. The search function does not appear to work. I searched for "Clinton". No results. I searched for "Bob Dylan". No results. I searched "Malala Yousafzai". No results.
I really enjoy reading the articles. I've been reading Salon for years. I am more than a little tired of seeing Ann Coulters face everytime I open the app, though. The most read stories have remained the same since June. Unfortunately the most read story at the time was a story about her defending Trump as not being a racist. That got old a long time ago. If you could correct this I would gladly give you 5 stars.
Great content, good app.
I mostly love the content but the big space taken up by Most Read is so annoying because it never refreshes. Please either fix or remove it.
The "most read" section sticks on day's most read from installation or last update. Very annoying as dynamic most read would make for better experience. Rarely check this app.
Not a bad app, but for some reason the Front Page 'Most Read' section has been stuck on the same set of story links (and their accompanying images) for the last six months. Maybe more. I've reinstalled the app and the problem remains uncorrected with the update. Not sure what's causing the problem on Salon's mobile site - it does not show up on the regular website.
I don't think Salon reads the reviews and possibly don't care. Yes you have great articles and reporting but all that is overshadowed by when your mobile site crashes and your app has to be relaunched. Get with the 21st century Salon!
I enjoy the long-form articles and visit often. Why has an article about Leonardo DiCaprio's Rimi movie been on my "most read" banner for months?
Inaccurate. Authors are so one-sided. Not reliable at ALL. Probably trying to see how big of a lie they can tell and see if people are dumb enough to believe it. Delete it immediately
I love this app, giving 4 stars BUT I'd gladly give it 5 stars if they fixed ONE thing. I've just read a story so I scroll back up to top looking for arrow in top left corner that's basically the back button to get me back to section I got story from but sometimes it's not there and I've tried all kinds of things to make it appear on my iPhone 6 but most of time it doesn't appear so I close app, double click on what I have open and delete open apps then go back to Salon. Hope above makes sense but Cliffnotes version is make the back arrow automatically appear when scrolling back up to top of page.
The content is often good, but some of the columnists are off the deep end. The app is buggy -- new articles appear first, but after tapping "load more" you get a mix of second-level recent articles and stuff from two months ago.
This is literally worse than a high school newspaper....No offense to the highschoolers.
Great way to get a selection of the news of the day.
Excellent writing. Enjoy the stories. Salon has been my raft in a sea of poor journalism. Only problem is with short pieces that end with a video. There's no link to click. iPhone 5
Very low-quality far-left-fringe content
This app should be discontinued. Glaring problems from years ago persist, update after update. Today's insult? This 2nd to last update no longer hides the giant SALON logo at the top when scrolling down an article. Yay! Less room for content, more branding! I guess since this new 'feature' survived through 2 releases we're stuck with it. Thanks!
This version is DEAD ON ARRIVAL. No articles display, only text placeholders . Remove the app and re-install to recover from this faulty update.
Bazinga!
The content is fine, would have given more stars just based on that. Everyone can find a writer to love and one to hate on a given day. Functionality is not great. First, as noted by others, the app had to be deleted and reinstalled to work after a previous update. Now every time I open Salon it's reverted to the smallest text size, requiring a trip to Settings over and over. Pain in the..
Selecting ANY story/item - the APP CLOSES - BOMBS - started today
Yeah, yeah I know, delete and reinstall. But I expect to have to do stuff like that on a Windows PC, not an iPhone. Maybe don't break the app in the first place?
Settings like text size are not saved permanently. Sometimes lost between sessions. Sometimes lost only if app crashes. Oh - app crashes. Auto disappearance of < button sometimes fails as you scroll down. It remains sitting at the top. Worse, auto-reappearance of < sometimes fails when you scroll up - as it used to in very old versions of this app. I found the only way to get back is to load a link to some other story, then hit < and then < again as the back button reappears. I'm not using any new features. I only know basic functionality is now very unreliable. The basic program has become unstable. Salon has never been usable on iOS Safari. It hangs then reloads. This app is all site readers have. Sad.
